Lady Midnight
by Cassandra Clare
Are you interested in diving into a whole new world where demons, vampires, and fairies exist and roam the modern world, where the human race has nephilim, an angelic race of people, as protectors? Cassandra Clare has created an alternate universe where these fantasies come to life through her multiple book series of the Mortal Instruments and her newest The Dark Artifices. The most recent novel I have started to read of hers is Lady Midnight. In this novel, she introduces a new group of main characters who are nephilim. The story revolves around two teenagers who are parabatai, a unique bond people have with another person that the law requires to be in a non romantic way, yet with words like “I’m yours and you’re mine, you’ve always been mine, and I have always, always belonged to you!” (386) . The female character, Emma lost her parents at a young age and their murders have never been solved. When bodies start to turn up with similar wounds as her parents, Emma and Jules do everything they can to try and solve the murders, including going against their government-- The Clave’s--rules, in hope that it will lead to Emma’s parents' murderers as well.
I am not a big reader and usually don’t enjoy reading in my free time but I enjoy clare’s books so much that it is hard for me to put them down. The world Clare has created is very intriguing; it combines our world with a unique fantasy, making believable plot lines of a hidden universe unknown to humanity. In order to understand her most recent book series, you must read her first series, the Immortal Instruments. Although that series revolves around a different group of people, the universe is explained and important events happen that connect this series to the next, The Dark Artifices. Lady Midnight, the current novel of Clare’s I am reading, holds my attention with every page. The progression of the plot switches from different perspectives of the story. Mini cliff hangers drive me crazy but also motivate me to keep reading. Often times I find myself trying to get past one perspective to get to another because the other really caught my attention. That is a good way Clare keeps her readers in suspense and wanting more.
This novel is perfect for the young adult audience. It mixes an adventure, action-packed story with a forbidden love tale. One section of the book ends with “you’re mine”(326) and then the novel switches perspectives to someone giving directions. Clare is able to give you tidbits of romance or mystery then cut you off just as she catches your interest. Revenge is a main character in this novel: “Revenge isn’t family, Emma. It isn’t a friend and it's a cold bedfellow” (94). Will Emma ever get to avenge her parents? Will she fall in love with her parabatai? Read with me and find out.
