The Lightning After The Thunder

Stevenson Youyoute

Thunderhead
Neal Shusterman

*Disclaimer I have not fully finished the book, but I have read the book to page 250.*

In a world where disease, famine, and poverty is no longer an issue, thinking for yourself is entirely optional, and everything you do is being watched by an Authority Interference system called The Thunderhead; the only way to live in this society is to expect death at every corner.

Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman, is a sci-fiction that is a sequel to Scythe. A year has passed. Citra and Rowan are now on opposite sides of the Scythdom; Citra’s approach towards gleaning is different from the sides of the new order who kill because they find pleasure in it. She uses the compassion taught to her by Curie and the strategic choice of gleaning victims based on countless hours of research from Faraday.

On the opposite side of the Scythedom, Rowan is taking matters into his own hands using the people who, like Scythe Goddard, abused their power in the Scythedom for their own good. The Thunderhead, being an advanced computer system, finds that there are things outside of its control that it can't afford to lack an oversight on. So the Thunderhead, being the genius artificial intelligence that it is, finds a loophole to get a loyal Thunderhead follower to do something of his own will that can either end the Scythedom or save it, transforming it in the way the founders intended it to be.

I personally believe that this book is one that should be on your reading list even if you're not a big reader. This book has a little bit of everything for readers of all types, it takes place in a sci-fiction world but consists of drama, mystery, and even a little romance. This book consists of a lot of back and forth between the characters, between Rowan, Citra, Greyson, and Faraday.  *

About 200 pages of the book consist of setting up for what is to come and as much as I love background the amount of information is unnecessary, The amount of action that occurs later in the story makes up for its lack of interest early on.

The perception of Rowan is so well portrayed throughout the story that I could imagine being a 17-year-old with enough training that could take down even the mightiest of men within a matter of seconds. Rowan is used to being on his own prior to the Scythe apprenticeship and most likely feels he’ll be alright this time around because he was trained by the best. You also get to experience the motivation and inspiration that Citra who like Rowan is also just a kid, who was chosen to take the lives of people. Even though the timeline is different from the Mortal-Age Merica (America prior to immortality) death still has the negative connotation that is associated with it. To make a mortal age connection, Citra could be seen as a Mortal-Age disease owing to the fact that when Citra gleans she doesn't target a specific race, sex, or religious group but with dignity, pride, and respect which is something commonly lacked within the Scythedom.

The reason why this book is perfect for you is that it strengthens your moral beliefs it makes you question why people do the irrational things they do even in a world that all Mortal diseases are non-existent. The part that made the lasting impression on me was Rowan, he’s so confused that he’s willing to do things unreasonable because he believes, in the long run, it’ll even out the fact that Citra was chosen over him even based off his judgment in a prior time in his life. Rowan is a good guy who chose the wrong way to approach doing a good thing and even if people might see his way as radical it is necessary he tells himself, “ In spite of what the MidAmerican scythes might think, Rowan loved the scythedom.(134) Rowan is put in a predicament where he is so much in love with the scythedom that he would do anything to ensure it remains intact, but in order for the scythedom to remain in such order. Rowan does the only thing he knows how, and that is to glean those unworthy of their title as a scythe.

Citra Terranova also was known as scythe Anastasia is the change that the scythedom needs and people all around know it, especially the ones who are afraid her ways of gleaning impacts how they'll be required to glean. Anastasia has a perspective that scythes of the old ways respect and he character gives a chill to those who have manipulated their power as scythes. As Citra is asked to go against every fiber of her being she asks, “ what's the point of living forever if you can’t take a few risks?”(166) Even in a world where we don’t live forever such as the world we live in today, we ask ourselves that question. We use that question to justify any stupid or stubborn thing we do and also to define our accomplishments.

Greyson Tolliver, also being a character crucial to the storyline also finds the love he has for the Thunderhead to be something that he didn’t expect to take him where he is now. Through the Thunderhead Greyson did things he’d never be able to do until given the chance. He thought he was an open and closed book, just another case where parents were too busy to take care of their own kids and was forced to be raised by an Authority Interference. Greyson had no choice, “ if he thought about it too much, it would tear him apart. Granted, his mission from the Authority Interference was an unofficial mission, but that's what made it all the more important.”(210) Greyson in this situation is forced to choose between the two things he cares about most, and when he realizes that his judgment being clouded was not an option. Greyson's role in this book is so big that he doesn't even realize he could be the destroyer of the world he knows now and the one he experiences prior.

The intended audience who would really benefit from reading this book would be those who want an escape from reality. This book describes the setting in such detail you can imagine yourself at the moment that Neal Shusterman had in mind; Its so well written Shusterman lets you use your imagination to asses the situation based on your fundamentals. This book is so good that even google users gave it a 4.5/5  rating.
